Post thumbnail has been developed since WordPress 2.9, and it’s being used more and more widely in every WordPress websites. But there’re still old-version WordPress websites out there still doesn’t use this great feature (yet). And there’re also WordPress websites use other solutions for post thumbnail like using the first image of post, using custom field or using attached image, etc. That is old fashioned! Not using WordPress built-in post thumbnail feature, you’ll have to spend more time developing and maintain your code harder than utilizing built-in WordPress functions.
In this post, I’ll introduce you 4 plugins really helpful to begin with WordPress post thumbnail.
1. Generate Post Thumbnail
The plugin Generate Post Thumbnails helps to automatically create post thumbnails for existing posts using post images. This plugin by default takes the first image in the post content and assigns it as a post thumbnail according to specified settings in the theme. You can configure this plugin to take another image if you want.
The plugin Generate Post Thumbnails uses Ajax. It works pretty fast!
2. Auto Post Thumbnail
Auto post thumbnail is a plugin to generate post thumbnail from first image in post or any custom post type. If the first image doesn’t work it will automatically search for the next one and so on until the post thumbnail is inserted.
The Auto Post Thumbnail plugin works very similarly to Generate Post Thumbnails plugin, except one thing: Auto Post Thumbnail automatically generate thumbnails when you publish posts. So you don’t need to concern about thumbnail anymore.
Auto Post Thumbnail uses Ajax as Generate Post Thumbnails.
3. Regenerate Thumbnails
This is very popular plugin that you might have heard about. Regenerate Thumbnails allows you to regenerate the thumbnails for your image attachments. This is very handy if you’ve changed any of your thumbnail dimensions (via Settings -> Media) after previously uploading images or have changed to a theme with different featured post image dimensions.
4. Get The Image
As I mentioned above, there’re many solutions for post thumbnails such as custom fields, attached image, using 1st image, etc. Get the Image grabs images as thumbnails for you.
Get The Image has great options that fit almost cases of post thumbnails. You don’t need to write your own functions to get thumbnails for your post. Let Get The Image do it for you.
Of course these plugins are not enough for everyone who wants to switch from old-fashioned thumbnails type to new WordPress type. For example, I still haven’t found any plugin that helps transfer images in custom fields to WordPress thumbnails. Because custom fields are very widely use, this maybe a hard problem that makes WordPress users in a divided minds. If you know any one, please let me know in the comment, thank you.
